Rohith Kaliyur Properties of Algae Block 3 Individual Procedure Design Process 3
There has been a slight modification in my initial arrangement. In my original arrangement I had planned for a research phase, a design phase, and an experimentation phase. That has changed to also include a developmental phase. During this developmental phase I will also be assisting in another algae related project as well as be part of developing an algal mouthwash. The development of this mouthwash will be an intriguing experimental process as it offers a complementary set of personal advantages. At the moment, Listerine has established itself as a prominent producer of mouthwashes. However, the high alcohol content in Listerine is bad for 2 reasons. The first is that at times, using the mouthwash causes excruciating pain in the mouth for the user. The second is that the alcohol kills all of the bacteria in the mouth rather than just the bad bacteria that is intended to be eliminated. As a result, development of this algal mouthwash is the solution. It avoids all incoming pain in the mouth, as well as only targets most of the bad bacteria. This explanation makes it seem easier to produce then it actually is. Ultimately, the process takes a very long time, and involves substantial manipulation of various chemicals, and algae ingredients that play a role in this mouthwash effect. That being stated, what really caught my eye to this product based project was the minimization of chemicals in comparison with the chemical overload apparent in the Listerine brand mouthwash.
